How to Install a Metal Railing on Concrete Steps Handrails | April 18, 2019To improve the safety of a set of cement stairs and reduce the risk of injury from falling, it is important to know how to install a metal railing on concrete steps. Concrete can be difficult to work with and mistakes are hard to fix, so it is usually best to call an experienced professional when installing a new railing. At Vulcan Metal Works, we have a wealth of experience with all kinds of barrier and railing installations.
Steps to Install a Railing on Concrete
If your concrete steps do not run parallel to a wall, the metal railing will need to be drilled and bolted directly into the concrete.
In order to install a new railing on concrete stairs, follow this procedure:
1. Count the Steps and Measure Your Stairwell
It is important to know the dimensions of the stairwell so that the right size railing can be ordered for your concrete steps. Measure the distance from the bottom step to the top step and measure the total height from the base of the stairs to the top. It is important to get these numbers right so that the right size of metal railing is ordered. If you want to ensure accuracy in these numbers, have an installer measure the concrete stairs for you.
2. Order Your Railing
Find a reputable metal railing fabricator and order your concrete stairwell railing.
3. Dry-Fit the Metal Railing
Before drilling into the concrete, place the metal railing on the concrete steps to ensure that it fits properly. Mark the spots where the railing will bolt into the concrete.
4. Install Concrete Anchors
Using a masonry drill bit, drill holes into the concrete at each of the marked spots. Once the holes are drilled, insert threaded concrete anchors and secure them in place. Concrete anchors will last longer and not come loose when pulled on as easily as lag bolts or concrete screws.
5. Place Your Metal Railing
Set the metal railing on the concrete steps with the concrete anchors protruding through the railing’s anchor points. Place a washer, lock washer, and nut on each concrete anchor to hold the railing in place.
